Default ~$1200 about right

Original posting about $2000 for this job .... you are getting robbed. I have this ahead of me and in Chicagoland I visited 3 different independent shops who do Audu and VW work everyday. All said it will be ~$1200 parts and labor, inlcuidng waterpumps and all other stuff behind the belt. local Stealership quoted ~$2000.

Also, after that I had him replace both of my valve cover gaskets. He charged me 350 bucks for that.
The stealership quoted me 1950 bucks for the timing belt and 1700 bucks for the valve cover gaskets.

NH is not that far from me so it may be worth it for you to travel down here to save some $$$.
Hi mikefmcnally, I live in MA also. Do you have alot of experience with this mechanic? I am coming up on 90K and was going to have my timing belt/water pump work done by 90-95K.

Everyone else, any opinions on when you should have it changed? Should I wait longer? I think it should be around 105K according to the maintenance pdf I download but I wanted to be safe.

Thanks

Hi AllRoadMA, Yes, I go to Magno with my allroad and Pacifica. The maintenance schedule does say 105k miles but you never know when it will go. I refer all friends and family to him and they all love his work and are always happy with the quality and pricing. My car has been running perfectly. It will be going in to him again soon to have rebuilt turbos put in as my driver side one is leaking a little.

Good Luck!

I got 105K right now and no apparent problems, I know it is recommended at 103K, and I know I want it done before something happens. I had my 100K done by dealer and I was surprised they didn;t bundle this up with that service. I'm also looking around good shop to do this 1/2 chepaer than stealerships who quote 1800-2000 for this ...

Living in northern CA is all about paying a lot of money, so yea, there's no surprise that the price for a timing belt replacement around here is high as well. For point of reference, paying a million bucks for an "average" size house is pretty normal in my area.

As for the cam tensioner seals, the proper way to replace them is to remove the cams and clean the area thoroughly, which takes a lot more than an hour. Maybe some people have had good luck doing it the other way.

ScarMcar,

Where is that shop in Marin that quoted you that price? I'm in San Anselmo and need to find a shop to do the same for my 1.8T '05 A4 but that seems high - even for here. Did you get quotes elsewhere in Marin?

thanks,
Jeff

Default Indy shop in NY

just had my TB done last week at E2Motorsports on Long Island (Freeport)
those guys rock! only charged me $350 for TB labor!(stealership wanted $2500 parts/labor) bought the complete kit from blauparts myself. also had them do valve cover gaskets, poly snub mount, plugs,RS4 clutch, gutted downpipes and rear brakes

Evan and Dylin (brothers) do superb work for very very fair prices

car is much faster now and the clutch is superb

couldn't be happier!
