Tip is slipping in reverse, but no VAG codes

Tried to back up an incline today, and was NOT happy when the tranny started slipping.
Once on a flat surface I checked it again, and still did not like the time it took to engage and then it slipped again when I gave it some gas.
I grabbed my VAG cable right away and checked the AT block, dreading that I would see the 17125 code. But there were no falt codes found.
It does "clunk" a bit into R, but I haven't noticed any slipping before. Car has 89K mi (no ext warranty), with what I have to assume is original AT fluid.
Should I check the fluid level first? If so, I'll have to check the Bentley unless someone has a writeup or quick summary on the procedure.
Any other suggestions?
TIA

even the very best transmission fluid will lose it's performance over time. After changing the trans fluid per Bentley, this symptome was gone.
And as xtreetoes said....have it checked by a pro to be safe.

My dealer says it should be done every 40K miles at around $300-350. Cheaper than a $10K trans replacement. Have the dealer do it; not a Jiffy Lube job by any stretch of the imagination.
Here's an A8 trans fluid change article for comparison. Do some searching and you can uncover hundreds of similar "lifetime fluid" trans horror stories.
And I'v never heard anyone state the transmission filter is a lifetime item. By doing its job it will eventually plug up ....<ul><li><a href="http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/auto_transmission/autotranservicing.html">http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/auto_transmission/autotranservicing.html</a</li></ul>
