tiptronic making low humming noise on start up??
When I start the car up when cold; i.e., in the am or late in that day after it has been turned off for hours, the car makes a fairly noticeable low humming noise that appears and then stops after about five minutes. I noticed it seems a little more sluggish during that five or so minutes too. I just changed the fluid/filter which actually didn't look to bad; however, it still makes the noise. I have a vag-com and there are no DTC's detected. It sounds like maybe the torque converter, but I thought I would post something here too. Any ideas?? I would appreciate any suggestions-Thanks guys.

does this sound happen before you put it in gear?
ie: Start up, hear sound. Engage tranny still hear sound and sluggish performance.
Initally is the symptoms are of the secondary air injection pump. Most of us have the sound and ignore it.

Interesting. It does sound something like a pump. What exactly does this air pump do? Is it part of the tranny? Engine? I ignore it too, but I've found in the past that ignoring noises can end up expensive. (I thinking of the ex wife here too!)
Thanks,

f/u. Yes, as soon as the car comes to life and last 3-5mins regardless of engaging a gear. Should I be waiting until the pump stops before driving??

harmeless...
the airpump..pumps addtional air into the fuel system during start up when the motor is cold. What you hear is the cheap bearings in it. It sits ontop of the engine on the driver's rear side. It has nothing to do with the transmission.
It can be a costly part, but it is a part that most can install themselves. But, I have 155,000 on my allroad and the pump has been noisy for most if those miles.

Strange noise. As it has gotten cold I noticed on start up there is a sound I've never heard before.
