Default could be a couple of things....

To be sure you need to vag it to see if there are any fault codes. But the most probable things are the circuit board in the shifter. Its under the face plate. Or something happened to the magnets on the accordion cover under the faceplate. The circuit board uses the magnets to recognize that you are in "tip" mode, and to see the up and down shifts.

Default Here is a diagram of the tip mechanism.

https://forums.audiworld.com/allroad/msgs/153576.phtml
That diagram is courtesy of Want- Thanks, man!!

I am still not able to get mine into tip, as the diagram is helpful, but I am unable to figure out where exactly the magnet should be placed- when I opened it up, the small loose magnet (which I THINK goes in the little slot in the accordion cover to the left of the shifter) was on the magnet to the right of the shifter. Not sure how or why, or if that might even be right. I have been unable to access tip except for moving the small magnet over in front of the sensors to the right of the shifter. Brief tip indicator on the dash, but can't get it to stay in tip to save my life. It is probably something simple, and I don't have VAG COM yet, so I may be making a dealer trip. dammit.

Default Here is a pic of the magnet...

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v739/hliu55/steering%20wheel/tiptronicmagnet.jpg">

To get at the magnet, lift up the shift surround from the back end...

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v739/hliu55/steering%20wheel/tiptronicshifterremoval1.jpg">

Then, remove the shift **** (sorry no pics) by shifting into "4" or "S" then using a plastic putty knife to push the metal collar on the shaft of the shifter downward. Then pull the button on the **** **** outward until you have about a 1/4" gap under the button, and pull the **** upward hard! Be careful not to knock yourself out! IMPORTANT: When you get the **** off, make sure you use something to wedge into the gap under the button...if it retracts, it is a PITA to get back out. I use a blade fuse as a wedge.

Once you get the **** off, then remove the shift bezel by gently prying loose the four tabs (two per side) along the right and left side of thh bezel.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v739/hliu55/steering%20wheel/tiptronicshifterremoval2.jpg">

If the tip circuit board does not come off, simply lift that up to reveal the magnet.

Default I think I need to have my hand held on this one, sorry...

I have read several posts about "aligning" the magnet, and what a PITA it is. Looks simple to me, just keep it in the slot. Is there anything else I can try? I put the magnet back where it belongs, per your pics, and wiped it off with rubbing alcohol, allowing it to dry before starting the car... I was told a spill would cause this problem, and to clean the magnet. No dice. The circuit board must be bad, although the magnet was stuck on the other side of the shifter when I opened it up the first time. I am at a loss, and have never had my ar in tip yet!! That would make life a little more fun.
Thanks for your post/pics,
Jason

Default I think I have a spare circuit board at home...

e-mail me your mailing address and I'll get it to you. Just for clarification, your ar is 2001 with PRND432, correct?

I have an extra becuase I bought a shift bezel (the metal surround) from eBay to do a brushed finished one for someone else, and they did not want the circuit board. No idea if it functions or not, but I have not reason to believe it is broken. Might as well try it out. Might save you some $$$.
