The OEM Pirelli allroads are rated M&S so do I need to run "winter tires" for optimal snow performance. I took delivery with 40 psi and door pillar says 30 with 3 people in the car. What are most people running?

In a moderate climate the stock tires will do fine. The M&S rating just means there is a 30% void in the tread pattern. Real winter tires have a different tread compound that grips in the cold. It makes a huge difference on icy roads. I live in Minnesota and we had an old fashioned winter with lots of snow and ice. I am running Michelin Alpin Pilots on ATP S5 wheels. Combined with quattro and the stability program, the snow tires make the allroad the ultimate snow toy. I also do a lot of interstate driving in the Winter and demand more than a commuter would from the car.

I've run dedicated snows all winter here in Iowa with very good results. I'm not saying that I couldn't have made it to my destination with the OEM all-season tires, but I am just more comfortable driving in inclement weather with the added margin of performance and safety. To me, all season tires are a compromise: I have long advocated winter tires for winter and summer tires for summer. It costs a little bit more, but I can handle it and this gives me the best of all worlds. Just my two cents...keep in mind Iowa regularly gets 50+ inches of snow and my job necessitates driving around the state on a regular basis.
