Default Turbo failure question.

All these horrible turbo failures I read about on here - are they exclusively after market turbos or do people experience this problem with stock turbos as well and if so how common?

Default many are the stock turbos

IIRC their life expectancy is about 70K miles unchipped. Driving habits and oil change frequency also play a big role in turbo life.

Default 2nd - my stock turbo lady is sipping honey lemon water and singing warm-up scales.

I've got 65 K, no chip. I fully expect to replace them under CPO before next summer.

Default life expectancy?

My first turbos went south at about 30,000 miles. Yes, I was chipped with a soldered in APR 3.0 chip. It happened during a really bad launch, and my ECU also was fried. Chicken or egg? who knows. Audi repaired everything.

I now have 135,000 miles on my ar. That means 105,000 on the replacment stock turbos. If I figure it right, these stock turbos have been chipped for 85,000 miles. Yes I had the replacment ECU flashed with APR 5.0 sometime after the repairs.

What most with the 2.7T have found is either they are bad or they are not. The chip has very little to do with it.

Som turbos died as a result of fouled oil lines, others were a cooling issues. And naturally, some turbos were just bad on their own.

So @ 80k perhaps it's safe to assume I've got some good ones (fingers crossed) : )

Default Chips and oil and how you drive may figure into the puzzle

Turbos work for a long while on trucks.

Heat is a big turbo threat. Always cool the turbos down before parking might help. Don't rev 'em up cold (past 3k rpm @ <150' oil temp). They should whistle softly, just don't want to hear them sing.

Default Well when it's really hot out I have always heard them make that muffled whirring sound...

...sort of like a low chord on a harmonica. But in normal temps they are virtually silent. That's not singing is it? I've heard other ARs make the same noise in the heat.
