Default Stock turbos, Audi approved synthetic oil every 5,000 miles, and failure at 64k miles.

But they've been noisy for a good 5000 miles too. And it's only one turbo that failed.

Default This isn't a game of guessing or praying that something will hold up, it is

90% Physics and 10% luck.
The Turbo produces some of the highest revolutions on the car, exceeding 50000 revs a minute.

So you can imagine the contributing factors to make any turbo fail, a slight weight shift on the impeller wheel, inefficient oil and air flow to cool down moving parts so they stay within specifications, warm up and cool down process to allow the different inter-working metals to extend/reduce.....and there thousand of other possibilities.

Taking care of this equipment is vital but you wont have a guaranty that things don't break.
I'm pushing almost 50K on K04's with some real hard track time and she is running like a charm, could the turbo go sour during the next grocery haul? Absolutely. But I know I've done everything possible to prevent that from happen.

Given most recent events, I'd say that manufacturing issues could also play a big role.

So don't get paranoid about the Turbos, most ar owners have saved up a few bucks just for that purpose.
It's like asking when a Tire, a Coil pack of MAF could go out on you - the answer: anytime ;-)

Default I think there is a correlation between turbo failures and chip upgrades

Certainly this chips make the turbos run hotter and faster on a much more frequent basis. Driving it nice helps too. I noticed lots of chipped cars need new turbo's around 80K ish, but non chipped cars tend to go well over 110K without issues.

Default 50k rpms, ppffftt..

...on these tiny KO3's you'll exceed 50k RPM running in LIMP MODE.

Stock will run 150k RPM's all day long. Almost every chip out there will exceed 200k RPM's!!

Default LOL ;-) ....now you really scared off some people.........

But yes, they spool incredibly high and perhaps some brutally honest numbers will help to understand what it means dealing with Turbo driven cars.
