Default Absolutely...I read warm up, warm up, warm up everywhere I read about them...I am religious

about "warming" up the car in all types of weather...but I have a hard driveway to get out of so I want them ready, willing and able if I need them at the to of my drive. I pray they don't go out but as you say it is one of the hazards of the game of driving a turbo'd car...but another thing that folks forget is that for the hp we get out of these beasts we don't pay as much at the fuel pump for it...that's the turbo's saving us some bucks...everything's a trade off.

Default of course chips make a huge difference in reliability....

I know several people on this site are mod-happy and would love to think that their turbos are simply 'good' or 'bad' and chipping will not affect the likelihood of failure.

But just think about it, you are running the turbos at about DOUBLE their designed boost level. Putting them under much more stress, RMP's, heat and pressure.

If you read any generic page about engine tuning and turbos they all say the same thing: huge power increases at the cost of reliability.

Audi put this same engine in the S4 performance coupe, if it was really possible to just change the software and get up to 50% more power safely why wouldn't they have done it?????

In my years of religiously reading this and the S4 forum I have read many, many more turbo failure post with chipped engines than without (um, 1 stock failure iirc?).

As you can probably guess I have decided (with much debate) not to chip my engine. Unfortunately right now I need the allroad for maximum utility, not maximum performance.

Default ooops

I just went back and saw that you have an APR chip. I thought your post was asking about software more than hardware. my bad.

Default On more thing that has been overlooked here is a good tight air

intake system. If you ingest small particles of sand into the turbo intake you could be setting yourself up for failures. Take a little off one of those impeller blades and get an out of balance condition won't take long for a turbo to fail.

Default In summer here (maine), mine have a nice, muted whir/whistle when on the boost. During the winter

(as is coming up) I fully expect them to become near silent again. Don't hear them much in the cold weather. fwiw.
