VAG-COM Recommendations

Since I am running APR I think I need to get a VAG-COM solution to enable me to trouble shoot any problems I may encounter . . . At the moment I feel like a have a power loss but I can't find any specific problems (leaks, etc.). So, is my best option the Ross-Tech Vag-Com unit or is there something cheaper I can use that would be nearly as good? I know that I can get a cable on E-Bay which would probably work with the shareware version of the Ross-Tech software, but I'd like something that is fully functional with data logging, etc.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I bought a cable on Ebay and it works fine. I think you save quite a bit over the Ross-Tech cable - software combination, and I can't tell a difference so far.

I would consider the Palm platform - I already have an old Handspring unit which might be up to the task. I checked out the ProDiag site but I wasn't able to determine for certain if I HAD to purchase their hand held or if I could use my own? Also are there any downsides in using the handheld versus a laptop (such as datalogging/graphing/etc.)?
Thanks!
Thanks!
