The more I think about it, the more I realize the OEM design hitch is not well suited for US style bike racks. The fits of most US hitches, racks, and adapter pieces are somewhat sloppy, which can only mean the rack will end up somewhat wobbly once assembled.

Those euro bike racks are pretty cool. I don't know how the ones that only clip on to the hitch ball stay stable. I've seen others that have the vertical round part that actually fits into the receiver, those are nice too.

If I end up building my own hitch, I will have the center receiver for towing, then two small receivers on each side for a bike rack. The bike rack will be two bars spread out like a roof rack, with roof rack trays on them. This will be much more stable than a center mount rack.

One of the hitch builders for MINI Coopers does something like this, they have two "receivers" that look like gun barrels that poke thru the bumper, then the hitch bar engages those, and they have several different attachments that engage those two receivers. Sounds more complicated than it is but it works pretty well, you could do worse than to copy that design if you're gonna build your own. Here's a link to it http://www.minifini.com/ShopDetail.aspx?id=11
