What does a bad throwout bearing sound like (2.7T, 6MT)

The last time I drove my wife's allroad (2002 2.7T w/6MT, 94k miles) I felt that the clutch takeup wasn't smooth. It was a little chattery....and it made a little noise. Today my wife informed me that with the car in gear, it's making a whirring, fan-type noise. Out of gear, the noise stops. My guess is throwout bearing, but it's been nearly 25 years since I drove a car with a throwout bearing on the fritz so I thought I'd ask if anyone can describe the noise an Audi throwout bearing makes when it's on the fritz.
Obviously, if I replace the bearing, I'll replace the clutch as well. RS4, or stock?
Thanks guys (and girl).

your foot depresses the clutch pedal. The bearing pushes the spring fingers to slide the pressure plate away from the clutch. The clutch is "sandwiched" between the pressure plate and the flywheel. Otherwise the throw out bearing just sits there doing nothing. What your wife describes doesn't make me think it is the throw out bearing.
If I'm wrong, I'm sure a real gear shifter will correct me.
