Default Whirring noise = new front axle?

My 2014 Allroad just started to produce a whirring sound (sounds like fan blade lightly striking a surface) when I accelerate (when the engine is under load). The sound seems to come from the left corner of the dash. So I took it to the Audi dealership for evaluation. They diagnosed it to be a torn CV boot, which in effect caused all the grease to escape the axle area, which caused potential issue with the CV joint, and their suggestion is to replace the whole front axle. $3,400 repair. And they state they are not sure this is the correct solution. So they reserve the right to reconsider after the new axle is installed.

I've never had such a service evaluation come back with a guess.

Any insights?

This is the 2001-2005 Audi Allroad forum. Generally, an axle needing a new boot can be serviced without replacing with new. Most areas have a shop that will replace the boot.
