Default On the throttle? hmmmm

There are a couple of other items to look at..
Nost of these are from similar experiences in past cars.

1. Any Motor mounts..if one or more is bad then under throttle is can change the orientation of the engine/tranny and result in vibes.

2. If any upper mounting area of the ar's shock system is loose or has a bad bushing, this too can result in vibes

3. I would also look at the rotor and where it mounts to the wheel and where it mounts to the car..main king pin itself.

Default Re: OK, here's one for the record books...

It seems you over-looked this solution. It might be valid, my 2001 had this problem when snow got caked in the wheel spaces. I would have to drive with brake-pedal depressed to heat-up the wheels....

Default Don't confuse EDL with an actual diff lock!

EDL operates on the front and rear open diff axles, not on the Torsen centre diff. ABS/ASR sensors monitor wheel speeds across an axle, and if one is rotating substantially faster than the other (i.e. slipping) the EDL system momentarily brakes it. This effectively transfers all the power to the other wheel.

From audiusa.com:
"From the Audi Lexicon:
Electronic Differential Locks (EDL)
The Electronic Differential Locks (EDL) permit smooth, comfortable starts on uneven road surfaces. If a wheel starts to spin, EDL brakes it as necessary so that power is transmitted to the wheel with the better traction. EDL reduces tire wear and..."

Also, there has never been a version of Quattro which locked the centre Torsen diff.

Default Maybe they changed it, but back in 1998...

Quattro had a manual switch to turn on / off the EDL. In the snow I floored it with EDL on and off. With EDL on, all 4 wheels spun at the same time. Without it, 2 spun 1 front, 1 rear. Just like an old 4wd locker, there was no brake involved. Braking an open diff is the Mercedes way to do awd. I had assumed Audi didn't work that way and hasn't changed. Does anyone know the system's inner workings now?

Default quattro system, or engine thoughts

1) Because your wobble is only under throttle, is it an engine surging that feels like a wobble? On our 01 when going up a gentle hill at steady speed, the car is in auto but has selected 5th gear so its low RPMs, we get a minor surge/wobble that goes away if you force a downshift either by going tip to 4 or adding in throttle.

2) quattro - maybe one of the differentials is binding internally?

I stand corrected. I was right about '98, but it changed.

Default Check your power steering fluid level!!

topping off the (special) fluid was all it took to correct the problem on my '03 allroad.
