I am thinking about getting some audi a6 4.2 rims and wonder if the tires on them would work. they are 255-40-17 and the rims are 17x8.

a couple of links. First is allroadfaq.com, click below.
Try 1010tires.com and go to the tech pages. Also tirerack.com and read about OFFSET and other matters related to tire sizing.
The ones you found are not suited for the allroad as is. You would need spacers, at the least, if they'll even fit (I'm not an expert, just pointing you in directions I would go first before I bought wheels again if I were you.)
As for the 4.2 wheels, can you pass on the lead? I have an S6 that can use them and still need new/used summer rims. They fit my car as is. Maybe I'll be interested.
Have a safe holiday weekend.<ul><li><a href="http://allroadfaq.com/pages/wheeltire.htm">FAQ tire section</a></li></ul>

Lets see if I remember this correctly. . .
The standard tire for the ar in 17" is 225 55 17.
to translate that for you the tire is 225mm wide and the sidewall is 55% of the width (123.75 mm) and the wheel is 17".
The tire/wheels you were looking at are the same width (225mm)but the sidewalls are only 40% of the width ( 90mm) with the same size wheel.
That translates to the tire being 2.66 inches shorter than the stock tire (which has a 26.74" diameter and is 84" around). The 225 40 17 tire has an approx 24.09" diameter and a 75.66" circumference.
This will through off your speedo alot. When your doing 70, your speedo will read 77.72mph.
The stock tire spins 754 times per mile and the 225 40 17 spins 837 rotations per mile.
Another way to think of it is for every 100 miles that you drive, your odometer will show 111.03 miles. The car is actually driving the 11 miles for your 100 mile trip. Your expenses to drive increase (less gas milage, more frequent service needs, any warrantee you have expires sooner.
Then, don't forget about the wheels themself. The A6 has a differant offset, so you would need to invest in spacers (15 I think)count on about $100 for them and another $25 or so for longer luggs
below is a good link for comparing tire size and what happens with the change in size<ul><li><a href="http://elantragtclub.tripod.com/elantra/id201.html">http://elantragtclub.tripod.com/elantra/id201.html</a</li></ul>

The guy is not selling his 4.2 wheels he wants to trade me my sevas s-star for his 4.2 wheels plus give me cash. So if i do the trade i would be very interested in selling these to you because i do not 100% want them i just know i can sell them and get what i really want. 19 Oe A8 rims.
i have not been able to sell my sevas outright so a trade is my best option right now.

thanks for all the great info.I can never figure out the tire ratio thing! I did realize that about needing spacers though thats why i have 15mm sitting on the shelf because i know the majority of wheels out there i will need at least those to use.
