Do you think my 2024 Q8 etron (purchased on 7/5/23) has the "new motor assemblies updated with better seals, gaskets and whatnot"?

The Q8 has a new motor that is assembled differently (it has additional windings). It also comes pre packaged with the coolant run differently. It is even further upgraded from the motors that are replacing my original motors.

Well, at least that's good news for the later non Q8's (22/23?) that they're better designed to control the coolant issue.

Update on my TAC: Still awaiting parts. Actually, nothing has arrived yet. But three weeks in and no e-motors. I am a little surprised that none of these are stashed by Audi NA. To have to go back to the mothership to order new e-motors is a little...

Anyway, I did get a loaner Q5 a week in. So that is better, though I had forgotten how inefficient ICE is at my morning traffic commute. It is so nice to fill it up and see 495 miles indicated. But one 5 mile trip in traffic takes 10 to 15 miles of GOM range. Weird. So loud, so not EV quality. Audi should give e-tron loaners to all Audi ICE drivers and they would convert.

I hope you get them soon @A4 Phil

I just dropped off my e-tron S to have the dealer check the coolant system. I didn't get a low coolant warning but it's way below minimum level in the expansion tank. The service manager just called me and said that the S doesn't come with overflow catch cartridge. The e-tron master tech said the motors are different from the regular version. They did full compression test to make sure there's no leak. I was told that it just needs to be topped off annually. I wonder how the car is slowly losing coolant. I'll talk to the tech in more detail when I pick it up.

Still no parts. Dealer swapped me from the Q5 ICE loaner to a Q4 e-tron loaner. It is great to be back in a BEV again, but WOW, the Q4 e-tron is not an OG e-tron. Aside from the SOC% which Audi finally figured out how to display in the VC. Amazing. Everything else is just sort of meh.

Oh and it makes a noise. Some sort of gear noise from the front. The OG is just sooooo quiet. The Q4 e-tron is not.

I really appreciate being upgraded from a Q5 to a Q4 e-tron, but it is certainly OG e-tron appreciation,

Wow, really interesting to get your take on the direct comparison, @A4 Phil . This surprises me (you think there would be a bit more polishing in the years between the two), but given the VAG EV state of business recently, it doesn't really surprise me...

There is not a lot of polishing. The two vehicles really should not be compared. The biggest immediate telltale is the suspension. You simply lose a lot moving from the air suspension to the squeaky traditional.

Look, the Q4 e-tron is a great intro to EV's, however, moving backwards from the OG e-tron to the Q4 e-tron just does not make for a great comparison. Also, I had thought that the MMI would be snappier and it is actually slower than my '19 MMI. How is that even possible?

The last thing that I will say is that the drive selector shuttle is simply not as ergonomic or intuitive as the one on the OG. It is a little rocker tab that has deliberate pauses in it. I feel like shifting from drive to reverse in the OG is pretty strait forward where it has to be done very deliberately in the Q4.

Oh and the buttons. OMG, what happened to the beautiful buttons on the original e-tron. These plastic buttons are just not very nice.

Deep down I am a little worried that this is the direction the Q6 e-tron is moving. Please no!

Got the dreaded Audi e-tron System/Electronic Malfunction message yesterday afternoon. Every warning indicator in the car flashed by and car went to reduced power mode saying to contact service.

Update in case it was spread over too many threads last time, but Audi Service NEVER replaced the e-motors or drive module as they said they would last time because they cleared the warnings in the service center last time TWICE and then could not get them to reappear as "permanent" warnings, only "temporary" while they had the TAC open with the mothership.

So I am going to drive into service today and have them pull the warnings again and see what category they are though they appear to say permanent to me. Here is what I pulled with an OBD

Update after service:

Ok, the battery recall has thrown a total wrench into all things e-tron. I now have a scheduled appointment on Monday. At that time Audi Service HAS to hook the car up to the mothership for the battery cell monitoring. That apparently takes a few hours. THEN the mothership makes a determination as to whether or not the actual e-motor problem is E drive controller or Battery control module problem. IF the problem is battery control module, well then, an interminable wait might start. If it is e-motors as suspected before, then it is motor swap time...finally.

The note to everybody is that apparently, if you take your e-tron in, Audi is REQUIRED to conduct the battery diagnosis. That diagnosis is not a 5 minute code pull from the OBD, but takes a few hours connected to the mothership.
