Country of origin decals
When I was in Germany a few weeks ago I noticed that there were a lot of cars running the oval 'D' country of origin decals again (including my rental A3).
I thought there was no longer a requirement for those stickers with the new european license plates that have country letters on them.
Anyone know the real story here? Just curious.

Officially an oval country sticker is still required even with the EU style licence plates
Although I have heard stories of people being fined for not having an appropriate sticker when travelling outside of the home country of the vehicle I do not know anybody personally.
I also don't have a "D" sticker on my car and I travel regularly outside of Germany with it.
As I mentioned above though it is actually officially still compulsory in Europe to have a national identification sticker on the vehicle when traveling outside of the vehicles home country.
