I posed two questions to Daniel Stern. The following are those questions and Daniel's answers.
1) Is the position of the filament in the 9012 different than the 9006 (relative to the Hella DE projector reflector)?
Daniel: "No, identical, that's what makes this swap feasible. Any difference in the filament position or orientation would make it a "tuff luck, won't work" situation."
2) How much more heat does the 9012 generate than the 9006?
Daniel: "None. 55w in = 55w out. They are NOT overwattage bulbs. The IR reflective coating doesn't change the amount of heat, it just uses some of the heat to cause the filament to produce more light. Result is a greater percentage of the energy out is as light with the IR bulb than
with the non-IR bulb. The *filament* runs hotter, but the total heat remains the same."

I saw something in one of the detailed info links about "rebasing the 9012 to a 9005 base" or something like that.
I'm in for both, but am assuming these are straight swap for existing lame OEM bulbs--no finicky base finessing--right?

From the factory, a headlamp will accept one kind of bulb and one kind only. The reason this particular swap between two different bulb types is possible is because of the identicality of filament geometry (size, shape, placement, position of supports, etc) amongst 9011/9005 and 9012/9006. The HIR bulbs have a double-wide top ear on the plastic bulb base, this is to comply with the law requiring different bulbs to have different bases. The extra-wide plastic top ear is easily trimmed or filed to make the bulb fit your headlamp's bulb receptacle. Once that's done, they go directly into the headlamp, and the existing sockets snap on. This is very obvious when you compare the bulbs side by each.

http://bmwz.org/articles/lighting/0506trick/</a
