Default Doesn't seem a good method to me...
With the sockets it's much easier to swap chips in the future. Maybe they do it that way to keep people from copying their software.

The code is very close to most obd1 vw's...

Im my day to day life of me5,me7 and me9 the obd 1 code is a walk in the park =).
