I apologize for putting this in the S car forum as opposed to C4 but I thought you fellows might have more experience with this. I have a 96 A6 Quattro on which I recently put HD's in the rear. I was wondering if putting Tourings in the front would have adverse effects on handling. The HD's are about twice as expensive and I've read that they might require modifying the strut housings, which I'd like to avoid. I don't really flog the car, but I thought with as front heavy as these cars are, maybe the HD's are necessary. Thanks for your input and sorry if you have to move this post.

Regarding UrS cars and Bilsteins, in North America, we either run HDs with stock height springs or Sports with lowering springs (Eibachs, H&Rs, etc). I have never heard of "Touring" shocks. They sound too soft.
The old PNs were:
Sport: F4-P36-0369-H0 (front) & F4-B46-2066-H0 (rear).
HD: F4-P36-0370-H0 (front) & F4-BE5-2593-H0 (rear).

You can only get the bilstein touring PNE3039 for the front inserts they don't make the rears shocks. Basically it's similar to a boge/sachs never used them myself. For the price difference I'd just get the HD's or sports even though I'm not fan of the inverted design. Link for Dave showing the touring class insert.

Actually you get the B4 = touring info by just passing the cursor over the "B4".
Thanks, learned something new.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I couldn't find any mention of Tourings for the rears so I assumed they weren't available. Do the HD's require modifying the strut housing? I haven't read anything that actually describes what is necessary, although I've seen mention that they are slightly longer. If it is just a matter of making a tool and tightening the gland nut properly, I'm okay with that. Also what fluid type have you gentlemen used in the housing to surround the inserts? I've heard ATF works well. Thanks again.

I can't imagine that HDs would be too tall. That said, I suggest that you re-ask your question on the C4 100/A6 forum since the front struts on those cars are the same as yours (which are different than ours). They should have better answers:
