Default Careful cleaning your ISV

I thought it was time I gave mine another clean, so I sprayed WD40 in it and poked it with a screwdriver and left it for a couple of days.

Imagine my surprise when I refitted it only to find that as soon as the revs dropped below 1000, it would stall.

I had a rather exciting ride to work, it kept cutting out at junctions and when I had to slow for traffic.

Fortunately I was able to pick up another on the way home, so now everything is back to normal.

Which is nice..

WD-40? Maybe some carb cleaner but I wouldn't use WD-40.

Default not really... WD40 or carb cleaner work equally well.

Some people swear by WD40.. some people swear by carb cleaner. The important thing is not to let it stay inside the ISV too long of it will get in the the electrics. If it does that not really a huge deal as long as you let it dry out completely before hooking it back up. This is where carb cleaner may have the advantage because it evaporates. If you keep the stuff running through the ISV and not letting it sit there and work it's way in to the electric either product should work.

Default It's the "residue" from the WD-40 that I'd be concerned about.........Like you said........

the carb cleaner evaporates leaving nothing behind.

Default Clean with brake/carb cleaner. Put a slight spray of WD in for lubrication. Not much.

I've never installed ISV's dry, and never had a problem. The Ford Throttle Air Bypass valves like WD40 too.

Best "cleaner" for this purpose I've found is Automatic Transmission Fluid
