Default Clutch Slave Cylinder install tip(s)

Some of you have done this dozens of times, here's what worked for me on my "cherry popper install" =)

For those that dont have a Bentley and/or have never done a cluster master/slave R&R I figured I 'd share this experience,

From Bentley:
"To aid installation, engage 4th gear before installing the slave cylinder.
Pre-load the slave cylinder just far enough to install the securing bolt. Always replace the securing bolt"

Advice from a friend: lube the outer rubber boot so it has less chance of hanging on something when inserted into tranny.

So I d*cked around with the slave a good part of last night and a few hours this morning. I took apart the Slave cylinder (removed the metal rod and boot)...then inserted the half assembly into position to get a better idea of how much i had to push it in and how to maneuver it into the correct position on the notch. It finally dawned on me that it wasn't going in with my bare hands.

NOTE: I wanted to change angle of attack from underneath, but car is down, and parked on curb so ixnay on getting it on ramps...at least in my neighborhood.

I figured out that I'd have to depress the piston, then close both the bleed bolt and the input of the hard line (with some kind of stop). That takes most of the pressure out of the piston temporarily for install.

HOme depot, Kragen, Autozone...nothing. Ended up at one of the only Earls parts counters in San Diego @ Industrial Liquidators.

AFter getting this, the install took 5 minutes. NO JOKE.

Oh, FWIW, i used to have this $30 hand pump/bleeder some cheapie from Kragen, broke the first time i used it (on brakes). I found the Motive European Bleeder system for $51 shipped.

Again, i'll probably get a lot of BTDT reply's but to be honest if and when I have to do this again, I am going to take the same approach.

I'll be in and out like burger.

SO um....any tips for the Master Cylinder? =)

Default that's an awesome solution. I've been frustrated now by the slave cylinder on my cq for months

and I've basically just ignored it. How would you describe the part so that I can go about asking for one like it? I really want to get it done and out of my garage.

Many thanks.

Brian: I am missing your point. What is the blue thing, a manual bleeder pump?

Looks like he compressed the cyl and plugged it to hold the piston in?

Default Exactly. Here's why:

PUsh the piston in, then tighten both the bleeder bolt and the stop/plug. no air in the piston.

You'll then notice there is probably only 1/2 or 1/3 the amount of tension on the piston. So when you insert you don't have to muscle into place. I literally just "placed" it in.

4 or 5 hours of trying to get it on at different angles, and after all that jazz it took me 5 minutes to put on after "pre-loading" the piston.

Default Let me see if I have the Earl's P/N on the receipt.

But the guy said its a 12mm threaded AN to a stop. I couldn't find anything at home depot, kragen, etc. they all had Standard threaded stuff.

Default Earl's P/N 9919BFE ($7.01) and 592904 ($1.81). Click for description.

Earl's P/N

9919BFE ($7.01)
-4 AN TO 12 MM-1.0 ADAPT

592904 ($1.81)
-4AN Fitting Cap (comes in pkg of 2)

Can probably be done with just a 12mm 1.0 stop if you can track one down.

I wonder if the same fittings will work on other audi slaves.
