Couldn't the same thing be accomplished with tie straps, i.e. push the piston in and then hold it in
with a very long (or daisy-chained) zap strap (in a loop to the opposite end)??

I tried something simliar - I tried to hold the piston rod in by..
getting the thickest plastic bag and "cover" the rod to try to hold it down, zip tie, then when installed I can just cut/rip the bag to the the piston fall back into place. The plastic kept slipping or the rod would poke right thru the plastic because the pressure on the piston is so stiff.
Getting the air out of the piston was the most logical way to take the load off the spring.
