Coil Solution Confusion (csc)
Hello all,
I'm new here.
I have just spent a few hours reading about the problems and solutions for the aan ignition system. I am looking for some more feed back on the issue.
I have a 95 s6 that is starting to miss under boost above 3000 rpms. Idles well so I'm not sure how to spot the bad coil/coils. It comes and goes but today it really went out when under load. It shudders and has no power. Sorry no boost gauge yet.I know it could be a bunch of other things. I'll be ruling them out before I buy any parts unless it comes to the replace it and see point.
The problem I have is that I have the mtm-1 Chip that is a suspected problem with the crap/cheapest easiest 1.8t coils option.
The 034 HO set up is costly but is my fall back option. $675 isn't really a good option
There are no updates on the ls2 option. I understand quality coils are a must.
Has anyone had the same issues with with the ls2 set up as the 1.8l T / 2.0l T?
What is the issue? Is it excessive dwell or could it be a voltage regulator fault
or chip mapping (mtm-1) or firmware in the stock ecu?
Anyone tried the MSD Ls2 option? They look bad ***.
I'm not afraid of the wiring I just need a solid economical fix.
Stock Ls2 coils are cheap and the wiring seems easy.
Do they work or not so much?
This seems like it's too big an issue for us to leave hanging with no feed back on this since 9/09.
Maybe we are all still foggy about this. Thought I'd just call for Help.
Thanks for reading my rant

I have the EFI Express coil kit (LS2 coils). It fixed my issues, though you'll have to do some research to see if it's right for you. Here are some posts I have bookmarked relating to the issue:

Not sure if you found this: Link to a missing and hesitation diagnostic procedure that will help you track down which of your coils is weakest and most likely to be missing at higher boost levels:

Before you jump to a new coil setup, I recommend you troubleshoot the present system to determine where
the problem lies. Otherwise, you will be left with an OEM system with a problem (probably one bad coil) that
you can't use and is difficult to sell. At least, the four good coils and POSs would be marketable.

thanks
Thanks for the LS2 feedback. I'm going diagnose the problem before I buy anything. I needed more info about options. My s6 has 150k on it.I know one pos and a couple coils have been changed. I know I could fix it as it fails but that does not build a positive relationship triangle between wife car and myself. I want to make the best repair investment short of the 034 HO route. I spoke with a friendly Canadian Audi owner (James) who has done a cool new convert. He wired up some stick coils from honda cbr1000rr to our stock pos s'. They are two wire and are designed to routinely rev to 10k. Of course the reliability is a complete unknown. Wiring is easy and the coils are cheap and plentiful on ebay. 8 coils with connectors under $100. James says His car runs great. I'll do some more reading, diagnose my issue and make a call.
So what do you guys think of the Honda conversion?

Fixed cbr1000rr coils
My Urs6 is fixed. It was a coil. Thanks for all the diagnosis info. I went with the Honda stick coils fix. I know some of you won't like it on GP but it works well so far. I'm no purest so the frankinfix is cool with me if it works. The spark I get matches the best oe coil I had in color and length of gap jumped. They are two wire so the install was very easy and the cover fits. Performance feels the same as stock. It pulls hard all the way to red line. The best part is the cost 7 coils under $100 with wire connectors shipped. I still have the pos problem that could arise but new on ebay they are $70 or so and even less if you want to shop like that. One of mine is less than a year old so I'll buy one and reheat-sink them and keep the old one as a spare. Now the reliability test is on.

There has been a lot of innovation in coil pack replacement so I don't think there is anyone objecting to your solution just on GP. In fact, most will be interested in how this love triangle between you, wife and S6 works
out in the long term and what part the CBR1000rr coils played.
