Default fyi: when using the 3256 crank lock for t-belt timing belt procedure, the engine will not be at TDC

kday and i did our t-belts yesterday, and it was a great success all around. initially, you should line up the cam timing mark and check it against the crank timing mark on the flywheel while the engine is at TDC for cyl #1, to ensure the timing is correct. however this isn't the right position to engage the crank lock - the cam needs to be rotated about 90 degrees and the crank rotated 180 degrees for the locking tool to engage. took a little head-scratching and audi tech hotline (thanks bob and marc) for both of us to figure out.

Default Heh. Just got your call last night from voicemail. I was "off grid"...

...telephone wise last week. I was gonna send you both a note today.

Glad you got it figured out!

Default Everything lined up, but not at the same time...

The crank lock tool wouldn't engage when the engine was at TDC for #1 (factory timing marks). It was the same on both cars. The lug on the crank pulley was 180 degrees out. This actually wasn't a problem, as Marc reassured us, it was just unexpected. So we rotated the crank so the lock tool would fit and made our own markings, R&R'd the belt, then rotated the crank 540 degrees to verify that the factory timing marks on the cam gear and flywheel still lined up with the new belt.

That's correct. No idea why they did it that way, but it is supposed to be like that.
