i can afford the "right stuff" as you say, but why buy when you can make something just as good if not better then what is out there. I like working on my car, even though it can be a bit dificult at times..

Default Re: Sorry, but open air filters do not offer any real HP gains.

i may be totaly wrong but this is how i see things. the less work the engine has to do to ingest air the more efficient the engine will be. that is the whole idea. making air flow easier for the engine to ingest. but the whole thing is different anyways when dealing with a turbo engine, but before the turbo kicks in a better intake should make things better. before the turbo kicks in, air is sucked in via engine compression, every time a cylinder goes down for a breath, it draws air in. when the air doesn't flow well, more work has to be done by the engine to suck it in to the cylinder.

Default So you are looking for hp gains in the very low rpm range before the turbo kicks in?

Kinda a novel idea.
The truth is that a low restriction intake does help out with hp...if it really is low restriction and if the air it sucks in is at least as cool as the air taken into the stock box. (Do a search for "negative boost"). However, the diffence is minimal unless you are running a very large turbo.
From what I've seen with most custom cone intakes, the stock box does a better job of pulling in cool air.

isn't the stock box also "ram air" to begin with?

Default I didn't know Audi got materials from Home Depot

Is it made with handmade aluminized steel?

No one who bought it has complained yet about it not making that kind of power, from what I hear.

You FIGURED that, without ever trying it out? I guess you'll never get to brag about how the item doesn't exist now.
