Gentz,
as a result of our accident last March my wife ended up having
arthoscopic surgery on her knee. Her Physical therapist has
recommended she get an elliptical machine to help with her recovery.
Looking to learn a bit about elliptical machines, anyone know much?
Own one you like or hate?
Own an elliptical machine that you want to get rid of?
Regards
Chris
CPS installed and running, now to fix the miss.
Hey atleast it runs!

It used to be that a stationary bicycle was a good way to do PT on a knee.
Or take an existing well-fitting bike and purchase an add-on (at any large on-line bike stuff retailer) that allows you to use your regular bike as a stationary trainer.
And that last option is an assload cheaper than buying an elliptical machine, AND takes up a lot less room.

Get one with adjustable incline and make sure it is smooth and solid. Figure on around $1,000+ for a good one.
I disagree with |skolnick. Your heel comes up as your foot goes back, just like walking.
I also have a trainer for my road bike. That is also good exercise and relatively easy on the knees and you can really dial down the resistance.
Your wife should talk to her PT person about which is best.
If she has a road bike then the trainer will be much less expensive. If not the cost of a reasonable bike + trainer will run more than an elliptical.
Good luck. Knee injuries are a bitch.

Aqua-jogging in a pool is the safest proven method for scoped knees, medial tears, etc.
Zero-load bearing, and more than enough resistance to provide a good solid workout.
If you live close to a Y, the family membership for a year is 700 something...which is cheaper than an entry level machine, plus you get the benefits of full gym, sauna, etc.
All YMCA pools have aqua jogging harnesses. Your wife just needs to strap one on for proper flotation. She'll love it.
There's a lot of residual trauma around her knee, hip flexors, lower quads from the operation. It takes months for that inflammation to subside. There's a good chance her progress can be impeded by the elliptical.
I'm almost sure of it.
Its very easy to get carried away on the ellip because its somewhat lo impact, but I see it all the time w/ folks in rehab.
The protocol I'd recommend is Aqua-jogging a few times a week.
Ice the area when she gets home, and try to elevate that leg an hour a day after the session at the pool.
Keep her on a diet of Glucosamine w/ Chondroitin, ginger and cinnamon. These are all anti-inflammatories that will speed up her healing.

having done a few Ironman triathlons, 6 marathons, and countless other endurance events I've been down the injury road more times than I care to remember.
I actually get calls from a few PT's in my area when they get stumped . > LOL !
