Default oil on cold side of turbo inlet hose

Some background. Bought the car last year. Bought an upgrade turbo (k24/k26) from the same place I bought my t03/t04 for my 1.8t project for about the same price of rebuilding my current turbo. I just never got around to installing it.

I tracked down an oil leak (valve cover) which I was losing about 1 quart per 1000 miles. I noticed that I had a slight oil burn, but it was not bad.

Well, couple of weeks ago, I got hard onto the skinny pedal and it burns oil more noticeably. It has never smoked on startup, only after it warmed up.

I searched and found 2 similar threads on the subject, but did not see the answers I was looking for. https://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/124716.phtml
https://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/116881.phtml

I went today to replace my diverter valve and noticed alot of oil on the intake side. But I am not sure where it is coming from. The crankcase vent hose is dry as well as the exit of the airbox. The current diverter was coated in oil. I was scared to, but I checked the shaft play. It has some play, but also moves horizontally.

So, i am wondering, could this be the cause of my smoky S4? Where is the oil coming from?

I have already started to disassemble to remove the old turbo. One more question though. My new turbo does not have the port on the cold side that goes to the solenoid valve on the intake hose.

Can I just take that cover off and drill and tap the hole? Looks like there is a hole started, it just does not go all the way through.

TIA

There is probably a thread I missed out there that talks about this, but I was not able to find it. i have lost count over the last few days on how many times I have read through the F.A.Q. for answers.

Default Check your Turbo Outlet to IC inlet pipes

It may be a bad Turbo, bad PCV or it could be lots of blow-by from bad rings

Default How much play?

IIRC, there should be no radial play, and very little axial play.

At one time, someone gave us the specs on the allowable shaft play, but I can't remember who or when.

Give the archives a search. You may get to do your turbo replacement.

Default have it disconnected, so I will check that

if it is blowby, where is it coming from? The crankcase vent is dry, throttle body is dry. My PCV probably needs to be replaced since it still had crimped clamps on it.
