Check this 7A picture. The debt is due runner of cylinder 5. Perhaps the den on SQ is due structure of lightweight hood or so, as no other B-series Audis have them.

The dint in the KW cam cover cannot have been derived from the 7A since the 7A was developed after the KW. I understand the need for the dint in the 7A cover because of the configuration of the intake manifold. However, this is NOT the case for the KW intake manifold. Perhaps they did experiment with a "7A" style intake for the KW before settling on the final "TURBO" version.

That is why I added the comment on the hood of the SQ.
On rallyecars, angles and height of engine placement is different for changing the balance of the cars.

I am sure you are right about the balance thing. However, since the "dint" in the cam cover is well below the spark plug wires, I am quite sure it is nothing to do with hood/bonnet clearances. The "mystery" continues. Do you have any contacts at Audi who were involved in the development of these engines?

Good point! No sorry.
But I have helped out in restoring this car, but it's engine came back with AAN camcover (atleast, possible also header...). Can ask around alittle.

well I don't think it has to do with oil at all and Eyelid is about the the cover looking like the 7A cover and after working on my coupe I dicovered that the depression on my 7A is to accommodate the intake runner for cylinder 1
