Is there any hydraulic fluid substitute that can be used in an emergency?

During a road trip Sunday, the ps pump developed a leak and the fluid level dropped below low mark causing brake light to stay on.
1) Is there a commonly available fluid that can be used in a pinch to top off the reservoir if CH11s is nowhere to be found on a Sunday?
2) Aside from the ugly noises, what type of damage did I potentially incur driving back 2.5 hrs (~150 miles) home withe the fluid ~1" below the low mark? Pump, yes, going to replace anyway. Steering rack? Anything else?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

keeping some in the car would be a good idea. I keep at least a quart of oil stowed with the spare tire. I think I'll add CH11 to the other stuff I carry in the trunk.
