Trying to figure out heel and toe downshifting in the S6

I understand the concept and even have a grasp on how to do this, but what is the functionality?
I mean, I use it for everyday driving but is it just the most efficient way to slow down or what? Sorry for sounding like such a n00b.

You are in 4th gear heading for a corner you want to come out of in 3rd gear...
You want to downshift while braking, and you want to rev match the downshift so you don't upset the car's balance or abuse the clutch. You either need three feet or this skill...
