Does it support anything or can it be removed?

Default Nothing bolts directly to it but...
I would assume Audi didn't engineer a brace without a purpose. These cars are still unibody.

Just curious if it is actually supporting anything or if it is just something for the exhaust pipe in case sh.. happens.

Audi/VW are not used to put exhaust restraints of this kind and that would be way overkill with all those bolts. Most probably body reinforcement.

Mine was in really bad shape when I got the car. Full of holes, bent and cracked. I assumed it was useless so I removed it.

The exhaust never touches it. The mkIV vw's have a brace that is very similar that has an exhaust mount on top of it, but our cars do not. Probably just adds ridgity to the trans tunnel. Don't think it would help much as a skid plate. The cats stick down just as much.
