I'm not disagreeing, but, for the forests that have been cut down, what do you want to do?
I never said Ethanol was the best, but isn't it the most widely produced biofuel at the moment?

The point is...
...that the land on which the rainforest used to stand is only good for agriculture (ethanol production) for 3 years or so after clearcutting.
It is not sustainable. So stop cutting down, and let the land recover (by not planting agriculture crops on that land - you just have to leave it.) I suppose they could keep doing it. I wonder if there'll be a Great Amazon Desert after they're done?
Ethanol is most like gasoline in it's fuel capacity, so of course it's the most widely used. And the conversion from carbohydrate to ethanol is done by fungus they eat and reproduce, we use their waste product.
But the energy effciency is poor. Biodiesel is better. There are bacteria that convert cellulose to carbohydrate that yeast can turn to ethanol. That might work a lot better. Cellulose is EASY to grow, just about anywhere.
