Audi/s/scott did a write up a while back. I found it via an advanced forum search on "steering rack". Unfortunately, audi/s/scott has nuked the photos from the post [Red X]. Anyway, here are the words:

I just did this, 3 weeks ago, using Scott's doc without photos.
For ease of work in the cabin, I removed the drivers side seat.
Unless you are 2 feet tall, this is pretty essential to get inside there to work.
Didn't need the photos as it's pretty easy to read/follow his sequence, very tough to implement in practice because it is SO tight manuevering in the engine compartment by the firewall.
Definitely have a second pair of hands to work it out once unbolted, as there are several wires that snag the rack on removal. Go slow and easy to snake it out through the passenger side tie rod opening.
For other reasons, I had to remove my downpipe which opened up access a great deal. Good luck!

Does anyone have pics of this saved?
I need an image of the area where it connects to the Drivers Fenderwell.
What bolts are used to retain it. I did it mid Head/Swap so I've got a few bolts left over. Are they Allen or Bolts? I dont see anything in my selection thats left that looks right but it could just be me.
Thanks

Great, Thanks for the image. Looks like I"m missing a bolt then. I found one that looks right.
Did anyone have issues getting the bolt holes to line up. Rack is in. Pass side bolt is in. Steering gear input shaft is attached to the U-Joint under dash by firewall. I can not get the rack the last 1/2 - 1/4" to where I can bolt in those two bolts. I can pry it with a pry bar and get it close. It shouldn't be this tight though IMHO. I can not figure out why its binding.
Ideas?
