Default Attempting coolant flush, t-stat not opening?

Just finished up a timing belt job and a whole bunch of other parts. I am now attempting to flush the green coolant that is currently left in there and replace with the blue coolant that blau sent me. I pulled the water pump, t-stat, rad hoses, etc when doing the timing belt job. After replacing everything, I filled the block and coolant reservoir with distilled water and let the car run. The engine heats up to the thick line a little to the left of the 12 o’clock mark on the temp gauge. However, I don’t think my t-stat (which is new) opened because I didn’t see the reservoir drop substantially after topping it off when cold nor did I hear the fan kick on. It is about 32 degrees here in NY, but I let the car run for quite some time. The car is new to me, so I assume that mark a little left to the 12 o’clock position is normal operating temperature? What would be the best way to ensure flushing and filling with new coolant? I’ve read a member here pulled the blue valve at the bottom of the radiator and let the car run until clear water came out, then filled it up to 9 liters, drained 4.5 liters of water, and dumped in 4.5 liters of coolant. Is this the best way to go about this? Thanks for any suggestions!

If your temp gauge is getting that high, it should be opening up. That mark is 90*. If you need to check if the gauge is accurate, then go into the FAQ and find the "Secrets of the climate control panel" thread. You can check the coolant temp with the climate control panel as well.

Just make sure you get ALL of that green stuff out before you add new blue coolant!
