Default Car died, towed to the dealer, diagnosed faulty engine speed sensor...

They are charging me 300 bucks for the job. Seems reasonable, how hard are these to change and how much would the part cost me if I went and bought it myself? The car is actually in Syracuse at Burdick Audi so fixing it myself is probably not and option since I reside in buffalo. I tried pulling the codes off the hvac controls when the car went dead before i had it towed, got nothing for the speed sensor so I had no clue what it was.

Default Engine speed sensor code can be a false positive if the engine doesn't start because say the fuel..

pump died on you. I would suspect you have a fuel pump issue and NOT a speed sensor. However, IF you decide to do the work the speed sensor PN is:

034 905 381A (its gray)

The G4 ignition timing sender is 034 905 381 (its black).

Check the FAQ for fuel pump testing info.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/116988.phtml">Info on Engine Speed Sensor G28 from the FAQ</a></li></ul>

Default For future reference, the climate control head does not show the engine codes. For that you need to

check then engine blink codes from the fuse/relay box under the hood (in the air plenum area).

I just replaced the fuel pump to avoid something like this since they are prone to failure at 100K+

Why would you ever take the car to the dealer?

My towing coverage is to the nearest audi dealer. I was 150 miles from home.

Default Happened me me last week. No codes though. Decided it must be flaky J17 fuel pump relay

Wish I knew for sure - because it's working fine now. I'll buy a spare.
