Default CV boot jobs aren't that messy. Only took me... two days to finally get completely clean.

Getting home at 3am, taking a shower, and discovering that there is tons of it in your hair also was fun too.

Default Suggestion...

Once you have the boot off, and the whole mess apart... Put the whole end of the axle shaft and CV into a painters bucket and pour in some gasoline or mineral spirits.

Go back the next day and it should be pretty much 100% dissolved and easy to wipe clean.

I've done several CV boot replacements, and even replaced a cracked brae on my old S4! They are ALWAYS a messy PITA job. BUT, make sure you have a brass drift to get the CV end off!! It really is a life saver.

Default Unless there is a ton of dirt in the joint, I don't clean it.

I wipe off all visible grease, squirt a bunch of new grease into the axle hole and slam the joint back onto the shaft. The shaft forces the new grease through the joint. Cleaning solvents are impossible to fully remove without disassembling the joint. I think my method is the lesser of two evils.

Default That's the most pornographic thing I've read all day.

My boot torein half on the way up to NH and got **** alllll over outside and in. Luckily there was enough grease to not warrant replacing the joint.
