They're not 'bad', just not preferred. They allow more stretch/give than the traditional ARP studs.

This statement from arp makes them sound like they are better? "You will also note that ARP® offers specially undercut studs for several engines. This procedure (done only to the shorter studs) more equalizes the “stretch” of both studs, which makes for a more consistent
clamping force—and one that compensates for head gasket compression when the cylinder heads are installed. This helps prevent blown head gaskets, and assures optimum engine sealing!"

Exactly, as per the ARP engineers last time I talked to them, what I originally posted was pretty much verbatim. They stretch to compensate for applications with higher than normal thermal expansion. This is not a problem with the 20v, thus there's no need for the undercut studs in this application.

Thanks for the reply guys. I went out and bought a M12 triple square socket and it did the trick. The head is off. Heavy SOB with the exhaust manifold, turbo and intake manifold still on it.

So now the assessment. Looks like I have 6 bent intake valves. Pistons look decent, no markings from the valve impact. I will post some pictures later today. Not an easy job removing the head, but well worth it as I learned a lot from this process. Thanks all.
