Do I really need a VAG-COM cable?

Chaps,
I found some info on a DIY VAG-COM cable.. I ordered up the components and soldered them all up on some breadboard..
No I have completed the curcuit, I am too worried to try it out, I fear I may break something as I am not confident that the circuit is correct - it is a long time since I built circuits at University..
I've never had the 'check engine' light come on at all, so do I really need to read the codes?
I thought it might be cool to use the telemetry via the cable to plot graphs of my cars performance, but the more I think about it, the less I think I would ever be bothered to rig up my laptop and use it..
If my 'check engine' light does come on, I can read the codes through my climate display?
Cheers..<ul><li><a href="http://www.planetfall.com/~jeff/obdii/">DIY VAG-COM interface</a></li></ul>

The CEL can be burned out or not installed, and there are several codes that will remain in the ECU even if the CEL is not lit. Blinking those out is easy, though.
I bought the HEX-COM and the adapter. Yeah, I got ripped off by paying 50 bucks for the adapter, but it's something I don't have to think about and I never can plug it in wrong. The VAG tool itself has already saved me hundreds, if not thousands, in repair and diagnostic fees and I'm just a shadetree mechanic... nothing advanced.
