does removing the MAF screens really make that big a differance?

I may answer my own question but...
was driving friends IA 200 20v with the screens removed and the car is amazing, great throttle response and the boost pressure feels like it builds very strong and is very pronounced. so I was on my way to school and the MAF died, car sputtered like it was gonna run out of gas. I put my old MAF in with both screens installed and the car does not feel as fast, throttle response is a little less and the turbo sensation is not as pronounced as it was before.
I believe my old MAF is not 100% good (threw the code so I replaced it) but we kinda have the idea the screens make a noticeable difference in the performance of the car
