does steering damper make noise if its leaking?

when I turn wheel to the right I get noise (kinda like a merry go round if not greased) seems like it may be coming from steering damper. gonna pull it off and check its resistance. rack was replaced last summer.

hope I dont drop that bolt!

Rod used to sell a cheap replacement (for VW Fox).

Basically does the same thing, just a lot cheaper than the Audi part.
