Default ECU Repair (or replacement)

Have any of you had an AAN ECU repaired? One of our local S6 owners phoned me to ask if I knew of anybody with a good ECU for sale. I checked with his mechanic (also my mechanic) who said some injector ground wires had shorted out (I don't know why) and caused the ECU some grief. He (the mechanic) says that it can be repaired (but it will take some time). I was wondering a) whether anyone here had experience successfully having an ECU repaired or b) if anyone had a "spare" ECU for sale.

Default I would get a second opinion on that ECU... it may be fine and there is some other problem

he blames on the ECU. Happened to SilvUrS4.

Default Check it first

But NOT by putting someone else's ECU in your car lest that one get fried somehow as well. Instead put YOURS into someone elses car locally.

Feico V. down in SoCal can possibly fix it, but I'm sure he'd take some time to do it even if willing. Try Steve first, he knows Feico too. Steve is usually on the UrQuattro forum.

Any used ECU (S4 or S6, US or Euro) will work in your car. They used to be findable for about $300 in Europe, and more like $600 here in the US if anyone is selling one. Pricey either way. If you do end up buying a NEW one, shop it around at any dealer you can find, even across the country, like Clair in Boston etc.. I looked into it a few years ago and was quoted between $700 and $1300 for a new one, IIRC. A lot of variation there.

Too bad you don't have a Euro V8 S6 (not Plus), I actually have a used ECU for one of those in my garage that i;m looking to get rid of.

Good luck,
Jim K.

Default Re: ECU Repair (or replacement)

I was trying to use a GM 3bar sensor and had an electronics repair guy at my company do all the work with running leads out of the ECU.....to make a long story short, he put a drill bit through three traces. I took it to an electronics repair place in town and they jumpered all the traces and the ecu works perfectly. Try finding a local electronics repair place to fix it. It cost me $ 20

Yeah, I realized that later, but too fat and lazy to edit. You got the gist...

Default How does the ECU fire the injectors?

Some type of FET? If so, that would be easy to replace, if an equivelent part could be located. Most injector drivers I've seen are just a simple 3 pin power transistor.

Some fuel injectors are 12-14 ohms. Others are 2-4 ohms. If you shorted it, it would be less than 1 ohm, which would draw a ton of current, overheating the injector driver. That's probably my guess what's wrong, but I could be mistaken, I know absolutely nothing about the UrS4 ECU.

Default The problem is...

that the components used in these ECUs are not common "off the shelf" parts. If you are lucky, the problem will simply be a standard component. If it is an injector driver array or other custom part, you would need to find someone that has these. I may or may not have the part depending upon what is wrong.

FWIW, there were actually very good exchange deals on these ECUs from Audi not long ago. Like $250 with exchange. You might want to check into that.
