Engine Vibration in '94 S4

Engine is all stock.
Engine runs smoothly under light throttle in low RPMs (idle to 3300). As RPMs exceed ~3500, I feel a vibration from the engine (I think). Vibration seems to be accompanied by excess noise. Problems seems to disappear as RPM's exceed 5000. Vibration/noise is also present in same 3300-5000 RPM band when engine is decelerating.
Any thoughts would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Get the car up on ramps, crawl under it and start wiggling everything you see, especially the various heatshields. Also check in the engine comaprtment, the heatshields around the airbox can loosen. Is the noise loud or subtle? Highpitched or low? Hard to diagnose...
