Over the past few months I've gotten comfertable with the s4. I feel pretty confident in it getting me where I need to go, although it is hurting on the suspension/braking front.
The thing is, I really am liking the new rabbit.
It would be nice to have a tossable car again and I love the simplicity of the car.
On the otherhand the car I'd want would be close to 20k. and with half of that in the s4 I think Id have an awesome car.
Im currently 20 and attending college while living at home. I have 0 debt (yet) and could probably put 10k down on the car if I sold the S4. Im planning on tranfering to a school in florida in a year or so if that helps anyone understand my situation
Opinions?

Used, reliable, and retains value. It gets you through college.
Then, when you graduate, you pick up a nice UrS car and mod the hell out of it.

I have some money, but Id rather spend it on tuition. Is there a middle ground anywhere? The S4 seems bullet proof but Id be kidding myself If I thought a 200,000+ mile car would be easy to keep 100%
I hate driving a car that is in need of any repair, dire or not. I dont think I could keep the s4 up to the point where Id be happy with it unless I invested some serious money and time prior to going away.

I drove a crappy Rabbit in college. I did all the work myself, and it wasn't too bad.
But as soon as I got a real job, that sucker was gone, and I bought my first Audi - '84 4kq.
But no way could I have afford to keep a big-mile Audi on the road in college.

while I have used all kinds of crap for beaters (about 25 different cars in the past 3 years!) Unless I have a nice audi to drive I feel like I'm missing something important, as stupid as that might sound. If I thought I could just drive anything for 2-3 years I not only woundn't have been on this forum for the past hour, I wouldn't ever be...

Having an older Audi is like having a constant drain on your wallet. Worse than a girlfriend.
Better, too, because your Audi won't mind if you drive another car.
Heh.
Anyway, you're really not missing anything, except the wallet drain. EVERYTHING about owning one of these cars is expensive. A college guy has more important things to do than try and fix a CPS on a cold Sunday night out in a poorly-lit parking lot.

still be way ahead in two years. Old german car ='s 1500-2000 annually in up keep. What would your car payment look like??? Never mind the 10 k up front...
MIght look at a older a4 in the 10k range - likely fewer issues than a urs - there are of course known issues (front suspension) but if those have been handled then you should be good to go.
Frankly if you can wrench it and it's been well maintained keeping her is likely the most responsible since you can't bear to drive a 2k beater.
Cheers
