Default Front Passenger CV Boot repair tomorrow - what should I look for when inspecting CV Joint ?

I'm new to CV / Axle issues so bear with me: what should I be looking for to see if I need more than the CV Boot Kit ?

The car has 190K and I wonder how long the CV joint & wheel bearing will last ?

Default Two schools of thought here:

One:
Remove, clean, and inspect the joint prior to re-installation

Two:
If the grease is still clean and the joint is quiet, add some new grease and re-install.

I used to be a "one" but now I'm a "two". Tearing the joint apart almost is a messy job, and you will almost always find some pitting. Now I pull the joint, wipe off the grease, squirt new grease into the hole that the shaft goes in until it is full, then re-install.

Default 2nd, as long as it doesn't have too much crud in there, just refill

if it is making noise, you are too late, otherwise, refill and go. A CV will almost never go out as long as it has greese and is kept clean.

Default Thanks - the car has more "constant" (i.e. RPMs independant ) road noise than my B5

and wonder if I should be selecting vendors for CV Joints and Wheel Bearing replacements - given it's a 190K high-mileage, car I have no experience with timing the rep. of these axle related parts.

I guess when you say "CV joint noise" you are not talking about constant noise, but the clickety-click or clunking sounds esp when turning - right ?

Default Correct on the 'Click - clunk' noises. That means replacement city.

If quiet- as others have stated - CLEAN is the order of the day. As your boot is torn - assume dirty. No matter how clean it looks.
