Default getting a weird noise from what seems to be a belt or pulley... any ideas?

just started getting a weird noise today.. I started the car up and got what sounds like a squeaking belt from the engine. I turned off the CC and it didn't make a difference. I revved the engine and found that it was definitely engine RPM dependent. Drove about a mile to the store and it quieted down a little, but when I got out of the car with it running I was getting random chirping sounds from the engine area. Popped the hood and it's definitely coming from the front end of the engine. Any ideas where to start the diagnosis? I had the timing belt done about 50k ago, don't remember if we got the serpentine bearing (I think we did). Could it be a fan belt or bearing?

I'll STFA, does this require a timing belt change to swap out?

Default Other way around. The TB requires the serp belt to be removed for replacement.

The serp belt and tensioner can be changed w/o messing with the timing belt.

Default No, but you'll need to remove the front end (bumper) to access the serp belt. If you're gonna do

that, might as well do the TB while you have the front end off.

Default well that's good... any way to tell which bearing it is?

I suppose the best thing to do is to replace the serpentine bearing and see if that helps the noise? Is there a way to disengage the serpentine (and run the car at idle) before going through all the hassle of messing with the bearing so I can at least isolate the problem?

Default The PO of my car told me that the serp belt could be changed without removing the bumper

It is very tight however and you will have to twist the belt to get it through a tight gap. I have never done this, im just regergetating what i heard. hope that helps.

Default use a screwdriver as a stethoscope

take a long flathead screwdriver. jam the point against whatever you want to listen to, and stick your ear against the handle. you will be able to hear any vibrations. move around until you find what's making the noise.

Default if you have the tools you need you can do it from your 'hood, if not you may have to go....
