has anyone tried driving without the steering damper?

Yes, dampening would be bad.
Damping is good, though! :^)
I haven't tried, but I know that people have reported an improvement after replacing their damper. I think without it you'd have too much tramlining and kick-back over bumps.

do you guys know why the car needs it?
i have yet to see one modern car with a steering damper and they don't tramline or kick-back.
maybe it's the location of the steering rack and the overall suspension geometry that promote this kind of behavior

I think you have it figured. Try it without and report back. My guess is that...
the target market, i.e. business men (people with bucks), who although, "sporty", wouldn't want the "beast" to bite them (kick back) or seem nervous ( tramlining, etc). They would want some insulation from this and a sense of calm and control. Hence the damper. But then with the damper, you need more power steering. Maybe this is why those that think the car is over power-steered when in fact their steering damper is just weak. A real interesting experiment would be no steering damper AND the servotronic disconnected. I am sure the car would still steer etc. It would just be more involving (ALL THE TIME). Probably not as relaxing as the OEM set-up.
Just some thoughts.
