Default How did the brushes look?

If they are worn down or sticky they will give that on again off again problem.

Default Brushes looked pretty good... (more inside - fan clutch?)

I did spray them down and work them in and out while liberally applying electronic parts cleaner though and that did seem to make the spring action a bit smoother, plus it cleaned a TON of crap off of the whole unit.

I am wondering now if my fan clutch is good or bad because when i re-mounted the fan today I noticed a wobble in the shaft. It also kind of freewheels with the engine speed, and I was also able to stop the fan with just the handle of a screwdriver. Is it supposed to be able to do that?? Is there any way to just fully engage that thing all the time? I searched the forum with the words "fan clutch" and came up with about 10 pages of stuff, but the connection here is not that good so I only got to read a few things before I got frustrated and gave up.
