Default Help me eliminate my driveline slack

Hey guys. I have been futilely chasing a driveline slack problem for some time now. I have replaced the following and after each item, it has gotten better but hasn't completely gone away:
1) Engine mounts
2) Snub Mount(ECS)
2) Tranny mounts
3) Driveshaft R&R

I basically want to eliminate the clunks that results when letting off the throttle and getting back on again. Happens in the lower gears at high rpm, as well as 5th gear at highway speeds. Prodding the throttle at 3k rpms in 2nd gear produces massive clunking from somewhere. What else needs to be checked? Subframe mounts? Rear diff mounts(Where do i find these??) Thanks guys,

Rokas

Default Either some wear in the CV joints or irs the rear diff, for example, it could be...

excessive tolerance between the crown gear and the pinion gear. You might be able to get this adjusted. Also could be wear/slack in the output CV joints to the rear drive axels. And so on. (Its an old car. Fixing the problem will cost more than its worth).

Default My first thought is CV joints - next - ring / pinion clearance. (Like Dave sez.)

Last - center Tor-sen. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

When you look at how much this drive train has going on - it's a wonder there isn't more!

In the 70's - the 'UJM' - 'Universal Japanese Motorcycle' (4 cyl across) - had huge driveline '******' (ride one - you will call it that too!) issues. Chain primary (Crank to Tranny) - a few spring loaded shafts in the tranny - and a chain final drive. Made the Jerky boys look tame. One reason I rode the BMW.

If you want to go on a snake hunt - put the whole thing on jack stands - leave it in gear - get underneath, and have 'friend' rock wheels back & forth - and listen - and look - very carefully. You may get lucky. Or - you may just get crap in your eyes.

Default Did you replace CV joints when you changed the driveshaft bearing? Also,...

you might seriously consider changing the rear diff to the V8 diff. This would eliminate the diff as a potential problem, and you would ditch EDL and go to torsen (just did this on my ride).

Default my "driveline slack" came from a loose exhaust mount...

I replaced tranny mounts, engine mounts, had shops look at why my car clunked, and couldn't find out why my car was so noisey when letting off the gas.

Turns out it was the exhaust mount right at the Y of the downpipe. It wasn't bolted on at all. Oops!

Bolted it back on, and no clunking anymore.

Default I don't think I've ever seen that mount. Is it on the downpipe?

At my prepurchase inspection at the audi/porsche mechanic they listed an exhaust bracket broken/missing. I did a catback system and everthing was intact and hooked up. I wonder if this is what they were talking about. Emmett
