Default How do I remove the X-plug on the power steering pump?

Need to replace mine due to a leak, does it just screw out or is there more to it?

Thanks Rich

Yep, it just screws out. However, the x plug uses an x socket attachment to remove it.

I think you really need a air impact wrench as well as the special napa fitting.

I just had my mechanic do it with the impact wrench.

Default You will need a drag link socket, Sears sells them.

You may have to grind it down a bit to get it to fit. Snap-on sells them too.

Default Here's my cheapskate method...

Go to the hardware store. Buy a punch or similar device (a file works as well). Then use a grind wheel to grind the tip of the punch so that it fits the X-plug just as a flathead screwdriver would fit a screw.

Total cost to me: $6.
Trip to hardware store: 20 minutes
Time to swap-out X-plug: 5 minutes

Easy as pie. Clearly, it's only a good idea if you have a grindwheel or something similar.

Default I was even more of a cheapskate...

I used a flat screwdriver at an angle and pounded it with a hammer.

Ugly, but it worked in a pinch.
