HVAC - Heater no longer producing heat

With fall approaching and the mornings beginning to get cool here in Canada, I tried turning on some heat in the cabin this morning for the first time since spring in my '93 S4.
Result; No heat.
Even with the temp turned all the way up to high, nothing but cool air was coming in.
The engine oil and coolant temperatures were both at the normal operating range of 90 degrees celsius and the car had been running for about twenty minutes, so it doesn't look like the thermostat is the culprit here.
I suspect some sort of flap in the HVAC system is not functioning properly, since earlier this summer I noticed that even with the temp set all the way to low and the air conditioning off that the air coming out of the vents was noticeably warmer than the ambient air temperature. At that time I suspected some hot air from the heater core 'leaking' into the air flow.
Since this morning the ambient outside air temperature was 9 degrees celsius it's possible that the warm air I noticed during the summer is still leaking in a bit, but that with such cool outside air it wasn't noticeable today.
Has anyone encountered this type of problem before?
Searching the Internet has not turned up much useful information and I'm not familiar with the workings of the S4's HVAC system yet (this is the first time I've had to look into it).
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Regards,
-Dave
